FISIP UNDIP Hosts Ambassadorial Talk : Explores Culture of Peace from Costa Rica’s Perspective

SEMARANG, November 17, 2025 – The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) reaffirmed its commitment to broadening students’ global perspectives by hosting an Ambassadorial Talk featuring the Head of Mission/Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Costa Rica, H.E. Mr. Francisco José Masís Holdridge. The event, held under the theme “Moving Towards a Global Culture of Peace: The Costa Rica Experience,” took place on November 17, 2025, at the FISIP UNDIP Theater, attracting an enthusiastic audience of 150 students.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of FISIP UNDIP expressed his highest appreciation for the Embassy of Costa Rica’s participation in sharing its valuable experience. “Collaborations such as this are crucial in shaping our students’ global perspectives,” he stated. The event was also attended by a representative from UNDIP’s Directorate of Reputation, Partnership and Global Connectivity, who emphasized the importance of cross-cultural dialogue in fostering international understanding.

The keynote address by H.E. Mr. Holdridge focused on the historic transformation of Costa Rica, which abolished its national army on December 1, 1948. “This landmark decision has enabled us to allocate greater resources to education, healthcare, and social development,” he explained. He detailed how this political choice shaped Costa Rica’s national identity, which is committed to the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the upholding of international law.

The discussion, skillfully moderated by Muhammad Faiq Aditomo, M.Sc., became particularly engaging when Ambassador Holdridge quoted Japanese philanthropist Ryoichi Sasakawa: “Blessed is the Costa Rican mother who knows that her son will never be a soldier.” He connected this reflection to Indonesia’s core philosophical principles, “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity) and the spirit of “Gotong Royong” (mutual cooperation), emphasizing that global peace begins with understanding, empathy, and cooperation among nations.

The participants’ enthusiasm was evident from the numerous insightful questions regarding the implementation of Costa Rica’s peace policies and potential collaboration with Indonesia. The event successfully provided a profound understanding of diplomacy and international relations while also paving the way for future cooperation between UNDIP and institutions in Costa Rica.

The success of this Ambassadorial Talk strengthens FISIP UNDIP’s position as an academic institution actively building bridges of knowledge and culture with the global community, simultaneously preparing its students to become future leaders with critical thinking and international insight.
