Semarang (16/07) – The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Diponegoro (Undip) hosted a public lecture titled “Gender Gaps in Job and Income Losses During Covid-19” on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, in the Senate Meeting Room, 2nd Floor of Building A, FISIP Undip Tembalang Campus. The event, attended by undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as lecturers from FISIP Undip, featured Prof. Mitsuhiko Kataoka from The Graduate School of Business, Rikkyo University Tokyo, as the keynote speaker.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of FISIP Undip expressed his appreciation for Prof. Kataoka’s presence. “I hope this event will inspire us, enhance our mutual understanding, and strengthen a solid and sustainable partnership and collaboration between Indonesia and Japan,” he stated. This remark reaffirmed FISIP Undip’s commitment to bolstering international academic networks.

Prof. Kataoka presented his research findings analyzing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Indonesia’s labor market using 2020 SAKERNAS (National Labor Force Survey) data. In his study titled “Mancession vs. Shecession: Gender Disparities During COVID-19 in Indonesia,” he shared several key findings that revealed the phenomenon of “mancession” in the construction and mining sectors, where male workers were more affected by job losses, while income declines disproportionately impacted women (“shecession”) due to their vulnerable employment characteristics.

The public lecture not only enriched participants’ understanding of labor economics but also provided valuable insights into strategies for publishing in reputable international journals. Prof. Kataoka shared his experience in conducting collaborative research and writing academic papers that meet international publication standards.

This interactive event demonstrated FISIP Undip’s commitment to delivering high-quality academic discourse while strengthening international cooperation networks. It is hoped that such public lectures will continue to be held to foster academic development within FISIP Undip.
