Vienna, Austria — Nuriyatul Lailiyah, S.Sos., M.I.Kom., a lecturer from the Department of Communication Science at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Diponegoro (Undip), was selected as one of the speakers at the international forum Dialogue Perspectives: Vienna Citizen Lab 2025, held from May 11 to 14, 2025, in Vienna, Austria. The event is part of a European Union research project entitled TWON (Twin of Online Social Networks).

In a session titled “Social Media, AI, Disinformation, and Freedom of Speech,” Nuri elaborated on how social media algorithms—designed to maximize user engagement—can in fact intensify the spread of misinformation and hate speech. She highlighted that the engagement-driven logic adopted by many platforms often comes at the expense of transparency, accountability, and user safety.

Furthermore, she addressed the limitations of current digital content moderation systems—particularly the lack of transparency and the slow appeal processes—that exacerbate the circulation of harmful content. Drawing on her research experience and her involvement in community-based digital literacy initiatives in Indonesia, Nuri proposed a community-empowerment approach and emphasized the importance of human rights-based regulation to create a digital space that is both safe and equitable, especially for women and young people.

Nuri’s participation in this forum also underscores FISIP Undip’s growing presence in international academic and activist networks. She took the opportunity to expand global collaborations, including inviting international speakers to a short course program organized by the Department of Communication Science, themed “Responsible AI in the Global South”, scheduled for mid-2025.
