Semarang (14/05) – The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Diponegoro (Undip) hosted an Ambassadorial Lecture titled “Belgium-Indonesia Relations and the European Union in the Context of a Changing World” on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, in the Theater Room, 1st Floor of Building C, FISIP Undip Tembalang Campus. The event highlighted the importance of understanding the 75-year bilateral relationship between Belgium and Indonesia, as well as the European Union’s (EU) strategic role in an evolving global order. The keynote speaker was H.E. Frank Felix, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and ASEAN.

In her opening remarks, the Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs of FISIP Undip, S Rouli Manalu, S.Sos., MCommSt., PhD., emphasized the relevance of such discussions in contemporary diplomacy. “Modern diplomacy demands not only theoretical knowledge but also adaptive thinking, strategic awareness, and the ability to identify opportunities amid change,” she asserted. She noted that this forum provided attendees with a rare opportunity to learn about international relations directly from professional diplomats.

H.E. Frank Felix, in his presentation, shared a pivotal historical fact: “Belgium was among the first EU countries to recognize Indonesia’s independence,” marking a diplomatic relationship spanning three-quarters of a century. The Ambassador elaborated on bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and development, as well as Belgium’s strategic position as an EU founding member and host of key EU institutions in Brussels.

The Ambassador also underscored core EU values such as democracy, equality, and human rights protection, alongside flagship programs like Erasmus+, which offers opportunities for Indonesian students. He outlined the EU’s role as a leading global development aid donor, including support for Palestine, and addressed current challenges such as the green transition, membership expansion reforms, and recent geopolitical dynamics. Additionally, he highlighted opportunities for Indonesia-EU collaboration, particularly under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and the implementation of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) for environmental sustainability.

The event, attended by faculty members and students, featured an interactive session with in-depth Q&A. This lecture is expected to strengthen ties between the Belgian Embassy in Indonesia and Universitas Diponegoro while fostering broader academic and cultural cooperation between Belgium and Indonesia. Through such forums, FISIP Undip reaffirms its commitment to expanding global perspectives within its academic community and contributing to Indonesia’s international relations.
