Semarang (03/13) – The Penabulu Foundation organized the “Adaptasi Goes to Campus” Talk Show with the theme “Driving Generation for Just Climate Action” and signed a cooperation agreement with the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Diponegoro (Undip) on Thursday, March 13, 2025, in the Theater Room, 1st Floor of Building C, FISIP Undip Campus, Tembalang. The event emphasized the importance of community empowerment, sustainable natural resource management, and the application of climate justice principles in addressing global climate change challenges.
The event was attended by the Dean of FISIP Undip, Dr. Drs. Teguh Yuwono, M.Pol.Admin., a representative of the Penabulu Foundation, Sardi Winata, Sip.MA., and three expert speakers: Petrus Damianus Pito M (Local Champion), Fahmi Bastian (WALHI), and Prof. Dr. Hartuti Purnaweni, MPA (Lecturer at FISIP Undip).
In his opening remarks, the Dean of FISIP Undip stated, “The Adaptasi Goes to Campus program is one of the key initiatives in building a driving generation for equitable climate action, as the impacts of climate change are extraordinary—this is a highly significant issue.” He emphasized that climate change effects are global and multidimensional, affecting not only the environment but also humanity.
Sardi Winata from the Penabulu Foundation explained the purpose of this collaboration: “Specifically, we aim to bridge the work of civil society organizations… so we need to share what we have done, what we are currently working on, and our aspirations as civil society in Indonesia.”
Next, Fahmi Bastian from WALHI highlighted Indonesia’s vulnerability to the climate crisis, particularly the threat of coastal cities like Jakarta, Semarang, and Surabaya sinking. “Indonesia is highly vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis,” he said, stressing the importance of intergenerational climate justice.
Meanwhile, Petrus Damianus Pito M. shared his experience as a Local Champion in preserving coastal ecosystems through the Muro local wisdom. “Muro is a traditional system for safeguarding marine resources,” he explained about the sustainable marine resource management practice in Lembata.
Furthermore, Prof. Hartuti Purnaweni underscored the strategic role of students: “Students can raise awareness, campaign on climate issues, and take concrete actions, becoming role models for their surroundings.” She encouraged students to actively engage in climate action through academic and community service activities.
Following the speakers’ presentations, the event continued with a focused group discussion where participants were divided into groups to brainstorm concrete solutions for addressing climate change. The session became more interactive with educational games on environmental issues, further energizing participants in understanding the material.
The event, which lasted until the evening, concluded with a communal iftar (breaking of the fast) and Maghrib prayer, fostering a warm atmosphere of togetherness during Ramadan. Through this collaboration, FISIP Undip and the Penabulu Foundation are committed to jointly designing and implementing community empowerment programs, natural resource management, and climate justice principles. This synergy between academia and civil society is expected to contribute meaningfully to addressing the increasingly urgent challenges of climate change.
