Semarang (9/4) – In support of students’ mental health and psychological well-being, particularly male students, the Directorate of Student Affairs and Alumni of Universitas Diponegoro (Undip), through its Technical Implementation Unit for Consultation Services, Disability, Discipline Enforcement, and Student Ethics (UPT LKDPDEM), organized a talk show titled “Strong Men, Silent Pain.” The event, held on Thursday, September 4, 2025, in the FIMENA Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Building A, FISIP Undip, Tembalang, provided a comprehensive examination of the phenomena of Toxic Masculinity and Quarter-Life Crisis (QLC), which are often experienced yet rarely discussed openly by men. This initiative is a proactive step to support students’ academic and non-academic achievements by equipping them with the ability to manage their mental health.
In his opening remarks, Undip’s Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Heru Susanto, S.T., M.M., M.T., urged students to utilize the forum and the services of UPT LKDPDEM for sharing and consultation. He emphasized, “(UPT LKDPDEM) was established by Undip to serve students. This includes not only academic services but also services for those who need advice, suggestions, or simply someone to talk to, or need to share files, videos, and so on. Please feel free to use it.” This address underscored the university’s commitment to providing a platform for students to seek help.
The event featured two expert speakers. The Academic Director of Undip, Prof. Dr. nat. tech. Siswo Sumardiono, S.T., M.T., in his presentation, explained the phenomenon of Duck Syndrome and the signs of QLC in men, such as uncertainty about life goals, overthinking about the future, feeling insufficiently successful, and a loss of motivation. In a calming manner, he advised, “Just take it as it comes; overthinking ruins our future.” Furthermore, Prof. Siswo also shared strategies for success in university, which include managerial skills, learning skills, and communication skills as concrete steps to navigate life’s dynamics.
The second speaker, Hasan Fahrur Rozi, S.Psi., M.Psi., Psikolog (Psychologist), presented material entitled “Strong Men: A Reflection on Masculinity and Vulnerability.” In his exposition, he introduced participants to the concept of healthy masculinity and encouraged them to avoid toxic masculinity. He reminded the audience, “Masculinity that is not properly understood, that is misinterpreted, will have broader repercussions.” This presentation provided a profound perspective on how social pressures and masculine expectations can affect mental health.
The event, attended predominantly by male students from the Universitas Diponegoro community, was highly interactive. Through this talk show, all participants not only gained theoretical knowledge but were also encouraged to better understand themselves and face various life challenges at a young age in a healthier, wiser, and more productive manner, supporting the realization of Undip students who excel both academically and psychologically.
