Global Experts Share Groundbreaking Insights on Environmental Governance, Digital Innovation, and Peace-Building at Universitas Diponegoro
Semarang, August 6, 2025 — The 10th International Conference on Indonesian Social and Political Enquiries (ICISPE) 2025 concluded today on an inspiring note, marking a milestone in global conversations on sustainability, governance, and digital transformation. Over two dynamic days, scholars, practitioners, and policymakers gathered under the powerful theme: “Fostering Collaborative Synergies: Advancing Environmental Governance through the Harmony of Public-Private Sector and Society to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals in a Digitally Connected World.”
The final day featured three globally renowned speakers who challenged conventional thinking and presented actionable strategies for a sustainable future:
✅ Prof. Hartuti Purnaweni (Universitas Diponegoro) sounded the alarm on Indonesia’s mounting waste crisis, revealing that nearly 40% of the country’s 33.6 million tonnes of annual waste remains unmanaged. With plastic pollution threatening marine ecosystems, Prof. Hartuti called for a bold paradigm shift—from outdated “collect-transport-dispose” methods to integrated waste management powered by 3R principles, sanitary landfills, and waste-to-energy technologies, with active participation from every layer of society.
✅ Dr. Lin Wu (Nottingham University Business School) wowed participants with a case study from China, showcasing how digital innovation can supercharge social enterprises to balance business goals with social impact. Through smart community gyms, mobile membership platforms, and freelance trainer networks, Dr. Wu demonstrated how O2O closed-loop systems and value co-creation can redefine public health and sustainability in the digital age.
✅ Dr. Mary Mangai (University of Pretoria) shifted the lens to global peace-building, arguing that digital connectivity is both a game-changer and a double-edged sword. Drawing on experiences from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, she revealed how technology strengthens civic engagement and accountability but warned of growing risks from misinformation and cybersecurity threats. Her message was clear: peace in a digital era demands inclusive governance, equitable infrastructure, and global cooperation.
The session was expertly moderated by Dr. Phil. Nuriyatul Lailiyah (Universitas Diponegoro) and followed by a spirited Q&A that sparked fresh ideas and cross-border collaborations. Participants later joined breakout discussions tackling three hot topics:
- Environmental Journalism & Literacy for Sustainability
- Public Management for Sustainable Environmental Governance
- Investment for a Greener Future
Closing the event, S Rouli Manalu, PhD., Vice Dean of Academic and Student Affairs at FISIP Undip, issued a stirring call to action:
“Let us take the momentum built in this conference into the future—by deepening our collaborations, advancing research and policy innovation, and investing in knowledge that empowers communities and decision-makers alike. Let us ensure that our efforts remain rooted in equity, sustainability, and digital inclusiveness.”
As ICISPE 2025 came to an end, one message resonated: collaboration across sectors and borders is not optional—it’s imperative. The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Diponegoro, extends heartfelt gratitude to all who made this event a resounding success. Together, we are shaping a future where people and the planet thrive in harmony.
